Whilst we continue to report on the progress being made in the US with FTTH roll-outs, activity within Europe is further slowing, and whilst, there are new (pilot) projects coming to the fore, when we consider the widespread excitement the technology caused as recently as two years ago, the supplier market must surely be disappointed. Although it has been recognised that the region can no longer afford to drag its heels in developing a strong regulatory stance, market supporters are calling for a well-planned model to be considered, which needs amongst other factors, to ensure a greater degree of cooperation and transparency than perhaps many incumbents would feel comfortable with. The Yankee Group estimates that by year-end 2005, some 3.3m households will have been passed with FTTH, but that only 0.8m will have been comiected to broadband via these same networks.
