Alcoa has slashed its projection for 2008 growth in global aluminium demand to about 6 percent from 8 percent based on the continued downturn in the construction and automotive sectors, according to Klaus Kleinfeld, president and ceo. The latest revision puts global aluminium consumption at approximately 40.4 million tonnes this year, up about 6 percent from 38 million tonnes last year. In a conference call, Kleinfeld also said that demand in China will grow about15 percent this year, down from the previous forecast of 22 percent, accounting for approximately 1 million tonnes of lost demand.
