The global surplus in the stainless steel market is expected to persist with stainless cold rolling overcapacity reaching 4.1 million tonnes and stainless slab over-capacity hitting 7.8 million tonnes in 2010, according to Staffan Malm, secretary general of the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF). While global demand is growing at a steady rate, additional capacity, particularly in China, will see a widening of the gap between global capacity and demand at least to 2008, Malm told the China Iron & Steel Assn's 4th China International Stainless Steel Congress in Shanghai on September 21. Stainless slab overcapacity is forecast to increase to 4 million tonnes this year, from 3.5 million tonnes in 2004, Malm told MB.
