Biotech crop approvals gain momentum in Brazil

Brazilian farmers are poised to gain a competitive edge in seed technology thanks to National Technical Commission for Biosafety (CTNBio) approval of transgenic crop varieties tailored to local growing conditions.Monsanto scored an important victory on Aug. 19, when the CTNBio approved commercial plantings of Roundy Ready 2 Yield soybeans, the first variety developed specifically for growing conditions in a market outside the United States. Eltje Loman, president of the Brazilian Soybean Strategy Committee, welcomes the approval, explaining that Brazil's ability to sustain recent double-digit soybean yields depends more than ever on farmers gaining access to state-of-the-art seed technology.
