The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is predicting a huge year-on-year increase in corn acres of 6% to 93.6 million acres, the largest planted crop since 2013 and the third largest since 1944. The agency's annual Prospective Plantings report released on March 31 far exceeded most independent forecasts in the last couple of months of around 90-91 million acres. Surveyed planting intentions were significantly higher than anticipated in North Dakota, Kansas, Nebraska and South Dakota.
