Japan’s hydrates success

Japan has achieved the world’s first gas production from offshore methane hydrate reserves, said Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corp (Jogmec) – with commercial production planned to be achieved within six years. Since 2001, several hundred million dollars have been invested in developing technology to tap methane hydrate reserves offshore Japan, which are estimated to be equivalent to around 11 years of gas consumption.
