Slovakia Prepares for Worst as Russian Gas Deliveries Drop

Slovakian officials have said that Russian natural gas deliveries are down 50%, forcing the government to prepare for various crisis scenarios. Prime Minister Robert Fico, who has been widely seen as one of the more Russiafriendly leaders in the European Union, stopped short of putting the blame on anyone, although he did say that gas supplies were being used as a "tool in a political fight." He said he doubted Russia would turn the valves off completely, but he nevertheless ordered the government to work out a range of options should gas supplies become unreliable.
