Nigeria Faces Oil Shutdown

Nigeria’s biggest oil workers union, Pengassan, has set a Jan. 15 deadline for a general shutdown of oil production, ramping up pressure on President Goodluck Jonathan’s government to restore a fuel subsidy scrapped in the 2012 budget. Nigeria’s trade unions called a general strike against the subsidy reform on Jan. 9, closing ports, banks and restaurants in Lagos, the commercial capital, and causing disruptions in other towns and cities around Nigeria (IOD Jan 12).
