Kuwait Government Resigns

Kuwait's emir, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al- Sabah, accepted the resignation of the cabi- net on Monday, a week after demonstrators calling for the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser al-Mohammed al-Sabah over- ran parliament (IOD Nov.18'11). The current government will continue to act in a caretak- er role until a new one is formed, state news agency Kuna reported. Sheikh Sabah had earlier been defiant in the face of the calls for the premier's resignation, reportedly saying he would not agree. In his resignation letter, published by Kuna, Sheikh Nasser blamed "negative practices that some [parliamentari- ans] insisted on maintaining at the expense of public interests" to obstruct legislation.
