Southern Sudan is only months away from becoming a new oil state, with voting on independence from the north due to start Sunday. After decades of civil war, the referendum is the climax to five years of uneasy north-south power-sharing and is likely to lead to the break-up of Sudan, with a newly sovereign south laying claim to most of the country's 475,000 barrels per day of oil production.
