EU Report Upbeat on Biofuels

Oil could potentially be replaced by alter- native fuels in EU transport by 2050, accord- ing to a report presented to the European Commission on Tuesday by an expert group on future transport fuels. Expected demand from all transport could be met through a combination of elec- tricity (batteries or hydrogen-fuel cells) and biofuels as the main options, synthetic fuels (increasingly from renewable resources) as a bridging option, methane (natural gas and biomethane) as a complementary fuel, and liquefied petroleum gas as a supplement, the report said.
