EU Probes Fuel Prices

The European Union has begun an inquiry into why diesel and gasoline prices are rising even though crude oil prices have fallen more than $100/bbl since last July. A commission spokesman said the inquiry aims to review the competitive situation in the European oil sector, including refinery economics, access to infrastructure and the impact of tax and environmental legislation. He said the EU is already concerned by the effect of diesel's price advantage at the pump on the refining industry. The final report should be available in June.
