Documents released this week appear to confirm the UK government's assertions that no specific oil deals were linked to last month's decision to free the Libyan Lockerbie bomber amid continued furor over the move. The documents show that Tripoli in late 2008 and into 2009 repeatedly warned that Libyan-UK relations would suffer should Abdel- Basset al-Megrahi die while in a Scottish jail, where he was serving a life sentence for the December 1988 bombing. The Scottish government released al-Megrahi, who is suffering from untreatable prostate cancer, on compassionate grounds Aug. 20 (IOD Aug.21,p1).
