Libya Sentences Swiss Nationals

The two Swiss nationals held in Libya since the July 2008 arrest in Geneva of the son of Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi, Hannibal, and Hannibal's wife, have this week been sentenced to 16 months in jail, charged with violating visa procedures. Tax evasion charges may also figure in the 16-month sentence, or may follow separately. The two businessmen, Max Goeldi of the Swiss-Swedish engineering firm ABB and construction employee Rachid Hamdani, were tried and found guilty in absentia, and have one week to launch an appeal.
