Western Coal grows fiscal Q2 output

Canada-based Western Coal achieved a 90pc year-over-year jump in coal production during its fiscal second quarter of 2011 and raised production guidance for the full year as output grew from British Columbia, the US and Wales. In an update today, the company said it produced a record 1.53mn metric tonnes of mostly coking and some thermal coal in the fiscal second quarter ended 30 September, compared with just 805,000mt in the year-ago period. Year-to-date, companywide sales stood at 2.80mn mt through the fiscal second quarter, up from 1.21mn mt in the prior-year period.
