NRC calls for upstream coal R&D funding boost

A National Research Council report released today recommends a 144 million dollars increase in federal spending on upstream coal production research and development to ensure coal remains in steady supply in an increasingly environmentally constrained world. The 18-month congressionally mandated study focused on coal mine safety, productivity, resource assessment and optimization and environmental protection, as requested by sponsors Sens. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) and Arlen Specter (R-Pa.).
