transient changes in extracellular concentrations of solutes and the rates of transmembrane transport of ions and nutrients cause alterations in cell volume, which are particularly pronounced in various types of epithelia. With very few exceptions, animal cells are capable of normalizing their volume in response to cellular swelling and shrinkage. Mechanisms of volume control are evolutionarily conserved and show substantial similarities across numerous taxonomic groups and diverse tissues and cellular types (1, 3, 6). Cell volume regulation is possible due to release or accumulation of ions and small organic molecules, which are collectively termed "osmolytes." Movement of osmolytes across the plasma membrane is mediated by one or more volume-sensitive transporters and/or ion channels.
