It is with great pleasure that I accepted the role of Editor in Chief for Behavioral Medicine in 2013. I come to this position with a firm belief that the wide variety of health problems that we face locally, nationally, and globally stem from complex synergies of medical and biological events with psychological and emotional states, as well as with social, psychosocial, and structural conditions. For the last 20 years, my own program of research in HIV/AIDS has been informed by the seminal work of George Engel and the biopsychosocial paradigm. What I have come to know is that the HIV epidemic is more than an infectious disease or simply a biomedical condition; rather, it is a public health problem that is best understood through a more expansive lens that marries the biological event with the emotional conditions and structural inequities that drive this disease.
