The IBF is the metal forming institute of the Aachen university. Thus, its main activities lie in the field of forming processes. The thin-strip casting project was developed since 1989 together with the former Thyssen Stahl AG, now being Thyssen Krupp Stahl AG. During the last years, the casting technique was continuously improved to an extend that the main focus in strip casting was laid on the quality of the product. The present-day research topics have been described above. In order to realise a thermo -mechanical treatment of the as cast strip, the pilot plant was extended by a hot rolling stand and two cooling devices (beyond the roll gap and on the run-out side of the rolling stand). Thus, the small pilot is well equipped and operated by a skilful team. The trials can be performed upon the small pilot at much lower costs than on the big pre-industrial plants. This will guarantee the further existence of the small pilot where effects of solidification and regulation are easier to investigate likewise. The IBF will keep working for a deeper understanding of the twin roll casting process.
