Bulblets of L. rubellum (regenerated in vitro from bulb scales) were cultured for 16 weeks in 20, 30 or 40 ml of liquid medium renewed 0, 1 or 3 times. The bulblets were assessed for growth and rot infection. Bulblets with a FW of >600 mg were obtained using 20 or 30 ml of medium with 3 renewals, or 40 ml with 1 renewal. Bulblets frequently turned brown when they were cultured in 30 or 40 ml of medium with 3 renewals; they frequently rotted both during a subsequent cold treatment (12 weeks at 4鴁250LC)and after transplanting in the greenhouse. Bulblets cultured in 20 ml of medium did not rot after the cold treatment irrespective of the number of medium renewals; they grew well after transplanting to the greenhouse. Bulblets cultured in 20 ml of mediumwith 3 renewals most frequently developed into plantlets with elongated axes 15 weeks after transplantation. The results indicate that use of 20 ml of medium with 3 renewals appears to be the most suitable regime for bulblet culture of L. rubellum in aliquid medium.
