Fuel consumption, heating and operation time for oxygen enriched air combustion in a high temperature shuttle kiln were studied to improve batch type ceramics firing furnaces. Fuel consumption per batch was reduced by 31.8 vol percent compared with ordinary air combustion. In addition, it was found that firing time was shortened by 14 hrs, resulting in a reduction of labor cost, an increase of furnace operation ratio, an improvement of productivity and so on. Although the peak value of NOx concentration produced in the furnace with oxygen enriched air combustion was the same as that in the case of ordinary air combustion, the total amount of NOx was three times that of the later and this is a subject for future investigation.
