Alumina bricks and alumina-carbon bricks were prepared with the same grain size distributions of alumina, to compare the effects of grain size composition. They show similar relationships between the grain size composition and the brick properties of fired linear change, bending strength and elastic modulus, but show different relationships for apparent porosity, bulk density, median pore diameter and compressive strength. This can be attributed to the difference in factors controlling these properties. The properties of the alumina bricks depend only on packing and sintering of alumina, while in alumina-carbon bricks the deformation of graphite plays an important role in the properties.
