Small diesel engines have limited emission control measures and are therefore responsible for 44% of the particulate matter (PM) emissions in the United States [1]. Besides PM, diesel engine emissions contain also nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOC), which exhibit a wide range of negative influences on both human health and the environment. To understand these negative influences, a profound knowledge of the physico-chemical nature of the compounds in the exhaust is necessary.The diesel exhaust composition of an engine depends on its operating conditions as for instance engine loading. Furthermore, the measurements are influenced by the used sampling method, especially the dilution of the exhaust gas. This study aims to explain the effect of engine load conditions and exhaust gas dilution on the composition of the diesel exhaust. Data on PM mass and VOC concentration are reported. A thorough understanding of these principles is crucial for a correct interpretation of exhaust measurements.
