EVALUATION OF PHYSICAL AND WOOD ANATOMICAL PROPERTIES OF 8-YEAR OLD Acacia mangium HYBRIDS

Assessment of wood quality of 8-year old plantation grown natural hybrids of Acacia mangium was carried out. Specific gravity, percentage of heartwood and sapwood were measured and anatomical properties such as fibre morphology, vessel morphology andtissue proportions were observed from pith to periphery at the breast height. Results indicated non-significant intra-tree variation in some of the anatomical properties. Only fibre length and vessel frequency showed significant inter-tree variation across the radius. Anatomical properties are not influenced by specific gravity.
