Following a major outburst of hydrocarbon gas, oil and water at a British colliery, the lack of any ability to predict these events was recognised. With coal reserves remaining in that and other areas close to known oil fields, a safe working method needed to be developed. The paper outlines the initial working method adopted to ensure safety, and describes the research effort undertaken to identify precursors to such events, and the development of a successful prediction technique.
