Assessment of fugitive dust emissions from an opencast coal mine

The best strategy for avoiding or minimisingpotential liabilities of opencast coal mines id to employ propermanagement of dust. A rational dust control plan requires sounddecision making based on high quality information and decision-making tools. One such decision-making tool is an emissioninventory which provides the most fundamental basis forplanning dust reduction strategies and evaluating their results.With such an inventory as a starting point, rational control plansmay then be devised for individual facilities in the context of theirfractional contribution to the overall atmospheric burden. Thefocus of this paper is to give an overview of the methods used forcompilation of airborne dust emissions inventory of an opencast-mine on the South African Highveld.
