The conversation of No 1 S/V shaft at Kloof Gold Mine into an up-cast airway

At the Kloof mine, the area served by the No.2sub-vertical shaft's infrastructure extends from 32 level(2555mbelow surface)to 39 level (3035m below surface). Projectionsmade in 1992 revealed that the area served by No.1 s/v shaftwould have been mined-out completely. The No.1 s/v shaft wasused traditionally as a parallel intake airway to No. 2 s/v shaft to32 level where the No.1 s/v shaft bottom is located. Theusefulness of this shaft infrastructure as an intake system islimited by the "bottleneck" affect on 32 level. An alternative wayof ventilating the proposed expansion had to be devised.
