Understanding the functioning of the human body has always played a central role in driving the search for knowledge, but never as in the past few decades have advances been so extraordinary. The recent achievements made in the different fields of biology and medicine received a huge impulse from their successful synergy with other disciplines such as mechanics, physics, chemistry, mathematics and informatics. But apprehending life is an endless journey. Together with the success and the progress in knowledge, new questions arose, new ideas have been set forth and new challenges brought out. The biological sciences are nowadays a melting pot where the contributions of biology and medicine cannot be split from those of the other new partners.
