A flying shear is used to cut hot billet as per demand. Any speed mismatch between metal and the shear blade results into a cobble and creates mill delay. The present work has been carried out on a flying shear, driven by a 40 kW DC motor. A data acquisition system has been developed to find out the sources of error in a flying shear mechanism. The acquisition system measures and stores data at an interval of 5 mSec. The acquisition system has been developed using a microcomputer and a PC. In each cycle microcomputer stores the data and at the end of one cycle the it transfers the data to the PC where analysis is done. This measurement system identifies the parameters, causing error in the control loop. By improving the parameters, cutting accuracy of the flying shear has been increased in a 250 mm Wire Rod Mill at Bhilai Steel Plant.
