Magnesium and calcium are biologically important metals. Their coordination chemistry in the mixed ligand environment would be helpful to unravel their mode of storage and transport in the bio-systems. Mixed ligand complexation of magnesium and calcium has recently been receiving attention. Presently, we have synthesised and characterised mixed ligand binuclear complexes of general formula [M2L2L'], where, M=Mg~(II) or Ca~(II), L = deprotonated salicylaldehyde (sald), salicylic acid (sal), anthranilic acid (anth) or 8-hydroxyquinoline (8Hq) and L'=deprotonated schiff base, bis-(salicylidene)-p-phenylenediamine (salphen).
