With the changes in the economic development and the aging of the population, cardiovascular diseases are becoming big problems in I he coming decades in Hong Kong. Physiotherapy service in cardiac rehabilitation plays an important role in assessing patients exercise capabilities, designing appropriate exercise programme, conducting patient and community education. A survey on physiotherapy service in cardiac rehabilitation was conducted to have a better understanding of Us recent development in Hong Kong and to investigate the needs for future development. Results showed that most of the hospitals with cardiac patients are conducting cardiac rehabilitation programmes. The targets of future development are to make available to all patients with cardiac diseases as well as to those persons identified as high risk group, better classification of patients according to cardiac status and develop e exercise protocols for elderly patients. Outcome measurement and conducting research in related area are directions leading to quality cardiac rehabilit at ion service.
