Bioplastics need not run on biofuels

The Society of the Plastics Industry’s (SPI) Bioplastics Council has released a paper challenging the perception that the bioplastics industry’s progress is inextricably linked to that of biofuels. The Development of Biobased Plastics Independent of the Future of Biofuels paper, published in August 2013, argues that bio-based plastics could achieve commercialisation at smaller scales than those required for biofuels, presenting greater opportunities to achieve market penetration with these technologies. The paper outlines these opportunities and addresses the challenges ahead for this fledgling industry.
