An antitumoral effect (if any) of the bone cement exerted on the adjacent tissues can be attributed to the thermal damage to the cells during the polymerization and is rather less dependent on the irradiation. Another possibility (but also a very low probability) is chemical damage caused by substances locally released from the cement, mainly during the process of hardening: methyl methacrylate and its hydrolysis products (methanol and methacrylic acid) as well as the additional ingredients (stabilizers). The amounts of these substances seem too small, however, to make this possibility believable.
