New applications of materials impose more stringent quality requirements. In particular, the materials must exhibit excellent mechanical properties. This is especially true of glasses, which tend to be extremely brittle despite other excellent properties. It is this high brittleness that restricts their potential in many applications such as lightweight glass components for television tubes, architectural use, etc.
