I'd had no symptoms and no idea that anything was wrong with me. I was fit and healthy, and had a good job in Launceston, where my wife Chris and I lived, as a loss control practitioner specializing in explosives safety and security. I had regular PSA and digital rectal examinations [DRE] and they were always clear. Then on Easter Monday, 2008, I woke in the early hours with severe pain in my lower back, buttocks and right leg. The on call Doctor gave me a thorough examination and ascribed the pain to acute sciatica. This was re-confirmed a few days later by my general practitioner. After three months of the prescribed treatment making no difference, he referred me to a neurosurgeon. After examination he arranged for a nuclear bone scan, MRI and a cat scan.
