Growth is gathering momentum, but its sustainability cannot be guaranteed - that is the message emanating from the Central Statistical Organisation's advance estimate of GDP for the current fiscal. At 7.2%, it is more conservative than the RBFs forecast of 7.5%, but higher than the 6.7% registered last fiscal. However, part of that higher growth comes from not-to-be repeated quantum jumps in output. And fixed capital formation, as a proportion of GDP, is projected to be marginally lower than in the last fiscal. As are aggregate imports, which too does not augur well for growth. The effects of a poor monsoon have shown up in the GDP numbers.
