Modification of Properties of Jute Yarn by Some Selective Chemical and Biochemical Treatments

Modification of properties of jute yarn consequent to its treatment with plain water,surfactant solution,steam,dilute aqueous NaOH solution,and a mixed enzyme system(mixture of cellulase,xylanase and pectinase enzymes),different oxidising agents(viz,H2O2,and a combination of H2O2 and K S O),have been studied under specified conditions.Among all the treatments,1% dilute NaOH treatment at room temperature(30°0 for 30 min,the combination of 3% H2O2 and 0.75% K2S2O8,at room temperature(30°C for 4 h render the resultant yarns some improved and balanced properties,in terms of low weight loss,higher moisture absorption,reasonable tenacity retention,elongation at break,reduced flexural rigidity,modified surface colour strength(K/S value),whiteness,yellowness and brightness indices.However,among these two prospective routes of modification,the.former,ie,treatment with 1961 dilute NaOH at room temperature(30'C)for 30 min exhibits higher softness and breaking extensibility of yarn at the cost of inferior surface appearance property;while 3% H2O2,and 0.75% K2S208,combined oxidative treatment for 4h at 30°C imparts much better surface appearance,but marginally lower softness and extensibility in treated jute yarn.However,treatment with steam,surfactant solution and mixed enzymes on raw jute yarn under the specified conditions are not found much advantageous in terms of improvement in yarn property parameters.Enzyme treatment may only be feasible,if it is carried out after suitable pretreatment of raw jute yarn.
