During the last six or seven years of Eakins' life, his health deteriorated quite noticeably. His eyesight also began to fail, although he was very secretive about it. His wife and former student, Susan Macdowell Eakins, had abandoned her painting when they married in 1884, but Eakins later relied on her to help him finish a number of his final paintings. According to the sculptor Samuel Murray, another student and Eakins' almost constant companion in his last years, Eakins was blind when he died.
