The UK railway was primarily developed to serve the coal mines of the north of England in 1825 and now, 184 years later, it is still the most efficient form of transportation for the black diamonds. Indeed, coal is still the number one commodity carried by rail in the UK: last year alone, over 46 million t of coal were transported on UK railways. But while it remains the most popular form of transportation for coal, this does not mean that vehicle providers are resting on their laurels when it comes to developing and supplying suitable coal wagons.
