NOTE NEW NAMES FOR THREE FOSSIL SPECIES IN THE GENUS TETRACYCLUS RALFS FROM SHANGDU COUNTY, INNER MONGOLIA, P.R. CHINA

JiaYing Li (Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Beijing, P.R. China) has described many new species and varieties of the genus Tetracyclus Ralfs, particularly from the Miocene deposits of Den Hua Jiling Province and Shangdu County of Inner Mongolia, adding to and enhancing our knowledge of the extinct diversity in that genus (Li 1982a, b, 1984, 1999, Williams & Li 1990). These species of Tetracyclus are summarised by Huang Chengyan et al. (1998) and comprehensively reviewed by Qi & Li (2004). TheTetracyclus flora from Inner Mongolia is nearly as diverse (c. 20-25 species) as the flora found in Miocene deposits on the west coast of the USA (an early summary for the USA is Loham in Moore 1937, a revised account is in preparation) and the east coast of Russia (see Jouse 1963 for a review; also see Williams 1996 and Williams et al. 2006). Such basic taxonomic work is fundamental to palaeobiogeographic studies.
