Ever since the invention of photography in the middle of the 19~(th) century, probably no other glacier in the Alps has been photographed more frequently than Vernagtferner, due to its immense interest to scientists. As a result a detailed photographic documentation of this glacier's development was begun on the 24 August 1884 and has continued until today. Between 1889 and 1928 Sebastian Finsterwalder, Adolf Blümcke and Hans Hess took photographs, always from the same positions, which can be analyzed scientifically to assess the changes in the glacier, including the dynamics of its last advance between 1897 and 1904. A selection of this photo material is presented here for the first time in a digitally remastered version. After 1938 until the 1950s only very few photos of Vernagtferner were taken by amateur photographers. From then on, however, the number, first of black and white, later of colour photographs and after 2002 of digital images, has increased exponentially. Apart from survey photographs an increasing number of aerial photographs document the retreat of the glacier, interrupted only in the 1980s by a short advance. Since then the decay of the glacier and the changes at the glacier surface have been monitored by a series of daily images taken by automatic cameras situated on the Schwarzk?gele mountain. Since 2011, pictures of the glacier and its changes have been available to all via internet with up to 3 images per day in high spatial resolution.
