The average dairy cow will have her teats squeezed over 800,000 times in her milking lifetime, so there is plenty of opportunity to cause damage if your parlour is not set up and maintained properly. Just because the pump starts and the milk goes in the tank it doesn't mean the cows are being milked properly with correct pulsation and vacuum levels, or that the plant is washing properly. "In spite of the impact poor parlour maintenance has on milk quality and udder health, research has shown that a surprising 60% of parlours still fail their annual milking machine inspection," says Fullwood technical director John Baines.
