Significant improvements to existing cow housing can be made without a big spend - but it's important to come to decisions after observing cow behaviour. "If investment in a new shed isn't possible, there are changes that can be made to make an existing set-up work better," says DairyCo housing specialist Richard Davies. For instance, Richard says more than half the existing cattle buildings in the country have inadequate ventilation. "It's important to maintain air quality to remove excess heat, water vapour and harmful micro-organisms," he explains.
