With diminishing milk prices, changing rules on quality payments and the cost of bought-in feeds continuing to rise, maintaining margins will be a far from easy task this winter. With many arable products in surplus, stock feed potatoes (right), overquota beet, fodder beet and cereals are an increasingly attractive option for those able to handle them effectively, says Keenan's David Jacklin. The glut of potatoes and carrots this year combined with cereal prices at well below 100 pound/t present huge opportunities for TMR feeders. Everyone should at least be questioning whether they can make full use of cereals this year and thinking about how they can use as much wheat and barley as possible - especially if your milk contract rewards highlevels of protein.
