It is once again my pleasant duty to welcome you all to ACTA's annual congress -- the 22nd. In 2001, I reported the industry had gone through a trying year; the position didn't improve in 2002. A glance at production figures show the downward trend inBurley is continuing and it's difficult to see how things will improve in the near future. In 2000, 8,2 million kgs of Burley were sold, this fell by nearly half to 4,2 million kgs in 2001, 3,9 million in 2002 and it's now expected less than three million kgs will be sold in the current season.
