INTEROPERABELITY IS A LONG-STANDING DREAM IN software technology A dozen years ago, the mainframe was going to die Unix and open systems would prevail, allowing organizations to incrementally build their client/server systems with minimum integration. Object-oriented systems were going to support the encapsulation of code and messaging, allowing people to build systems out of reusable components. The industry proposed Case Data Interchange Format (CDIF) as a standard for metadata interchange so that companies could avail themselves of the work done in one environment when operating in another. While these efforts brought significant value, none of them became the panacea for interoperability Now the industry is embracing extensible markup language (XML) as the means to define a universal standard for exchanging data electronically Do we have any reason to believe that XML will be more successful?
