On 17 December 2001, the then secretary of state for the environment Michael Meacher declared: "We aim for 40 per cent of the total market requirements to be peat-free by 2005 and 90 per cent by 2010." Today, we have a new plan of action to move the industry forward. The peat debate has rumbled on for nearly two-and-a-half decades. It was back in the 1970s that David Bellamy first drew attention to the link between peat use and peat bog damage. In the 1980s and 1990s, a number of environmental groups lobbied to reduce the use of peat in horticulture and gardening.
