Gladioli are those types of plants seen as blowsy and old fashioned, yet they provide fantastic swords of colour that can contrast beautifully with other summer flowering plants. They make an excellent long-lasting cut flower, too, and the smaller varieties can grace pots. The best feature of gladioli is their huge colour range, featuring the most striking dark maroons, purples, browns, reds, pinks, oranges, yellows, bright greens, blues and greys. They can vary greatly in size, from miniatures up to giant flowered types, with florets up to 15cm long and 1.8m-high spikes. Gladiolus varieties are so numerous that they are classified by size, colour and form using a system set up by the North American Gladiolus Council for exhibition purposes.
