Rust

The yellow or orange pustules produced by rust fungi on foliage and stems make it one of the easiest leaf diseases to identify. Many rusts are host specific, although some need two unrelated plant species in order to complete their life cycle, and some crop plants can be affected by more than one rust pathogen. HDC project PC 175 described nine common rusts affecting bedding and pot plants. Pelargonium, Bellis, Fuchsia and Antirrhinum are particularly vulnerable species. Chrysanthemum is highly susceptible to white rust, which originated in Japan but was accepted as an established disease in the UK in the 1980s when statutory measures were abandoned.
