Growers' need for plants with a compact habit has led to the development of a diverse range of control methods. As one breeder astutely put it: "The modern plant is defined by whether it fits in a Danish trolley." In other words, size does matter. Short, compact plants are increasingly becoming the mainstay of modern breeding and plant production. Transportation still remains one the biggest costs incurred by growers - if you can't cram enough plants on your Danish trolley then, ultimately, you arenot going to make as much money as your competitor with shorter plants. Whether it is desirable to have such a proliferation of compact plants is another story, but as the trend is still moving in that direction, what are the options for growers?
